Ski season is about to get lot more stylish when luxurious new speakeasy After Eight launches in Calgary this year. Hailing from the stable of Darren Maclean, founder of Calgary’s acclaimed Shokunin, Nupo and Eight, this intimate spot will be accessed via a hidden door off the lobby at the Alt Hotel Calgary East Village. The backdrop will be opulent, to say the least, complete with a vaulted gold ceiling and a bar top made from ‘old-growth’ trees to complement the intricate cocktail menu. Inspired by ‘Satoyama’ – the stretch of land between the mountains and sea – drinks will combine foraged ingredients and fine spirits to serve up a creative taste of the country’s rich landscape. Think the likes of the Noble Grove – Bridgeland Distillery Taber Corn Berbon Spirit, mountain syrup and pine tree tips – and Water Moss, a refreshing blend of watermelon and moss-infused gin. To make the whole place super-exclusive, the bar will only open after the service at Eight – the adjoining restaurant – has finished (10pm-2am).
